AASHTO Journal - FAA Issues $1.7B in Grants for Airport Upgrades

The Federal Aviation Administration recently issued a total of $1.776 billion through several grant programs to airports in 46 states to help support a variety of projects focused on runway rehabilitations, family-friendly enhancements, and safety upgrades.

That grant funding comes from the Airport Infrastructure Grants or AIG program and Airport Improvement Program, the FAA said.

“The FAA is prioritizing improving our nation’s airports and ensuring we issue grants quickly and efficiently,” added Bryan Bedford, FAA administrator, in a statement.

“This funding does more than just rebuild runways and taxiways,” he said. “It modernizes the travel experience for American families, ensuring our airports are safe and ready for the future.”

This is the most recent tranche of funding issued by the agency to support a variety of U.S. aviation system improvements.

In June, the FAA issued more than $523 million in AIG program funding to airports in 43 states to support runway rehabilitation, taxiway improvements, terminal upgrades, and other airfield investments.

In May, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued $750 million to replace eight air traffic control towers and Terminal Radar Approach Controls or TRACONs with new facilities alongside $85.5 million from the FAA to upgrade Federal Contract Towers or FCTs at 41 airports across 24 states.
