Construction will begin this summer on the first three sites along I-4 in Seminole and Volusia counties, which are expected to be completed in mid-2027. Construction on two additional sites along I-4, in Osceola and Orange counties, will begin in 2027.

Funding for this project comes in part from a $180 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America or INFRA grant issued to Florida DOT by the U.S. Department of Transportation in January 2024 to add 917 new truck parking spaces along the I-4 corridor, which carries 95 percent of the state’s consumer goods.
“Our truckers deserve a safe place to rest,” said Sean McMaster, FHWA’s administrator, in a statement. “[This project] will expand and deliver dedicated parking spaces right where they are needed most – along the I-4 corridor, which has the highest unmet demand in the state.”
[Editor’s note: Florida DOT’s I-4 truck parking project mirrors similar investments being made by other state departments of transportation in different parts of the country. For example, in a recent blog post, the Iowa Department of Transportation detailed how its rest area investments support the needs of travelers and commercial truck drivers alike.]
USDOT noted that roughly 40 percent of truckers spend over an hour a day searching for parking – costing the nation’s economy billions in wasted time.
“These new parking spaces will help drivers get the rest they need, reduce dangerous roadside parking, and make one of Florida’s busiest freight corridors safer for everyone,” noted Derek Barrs, FMCSA administrator. “This investment addresses one of the most persistent challenges facing truck drivers today while strengthening the safe and efficient movement of freight across Central Florida.”
“These new I-4 truck parking sites reflect a shared commitment to improving roadway safety, relieving congestion, and strengthening the supply chain,” added Jared Perdue, Florida DOT secretary.
“Florida is getting more out of every dollar by approaching these projects with a focus on innovation and smart delivery,” he said. “That’s how our state turns opportunity into results.”
