FTA Funding Available for Passenger Rail, Transit Projects

The Federal Transit Administration is making $166 million available via a notice of funding opportunity or NOFO to support a variety of investments in America’s passenger rail service and infrastructure. The agency is also making a smaller tranche of funds available to American Indian and Native Alaskan tribes to support transit investments.

The FTA said that $166 million in funding – available via its Rail Vehicle Replacement Grants program – aims to replace aging railcars while improving reliability, safety, and convenience on the nation’s rail transit systems.

The agency noted in a statement that one-third of subway and passenger rail vehicles in the United States are more than 25 years old and that such aging equipment contributes to system delays, increased maintenance costs, and customer dissatisfaction.

The agency added that applications for grants under this NOFO are due by July 6.

Concurrently, FTA is also making $19 million available through a separate NOFO to support transit infrastructure projects that involve American Indian and Native Alaskan tribes across the country.
The agency noted in a separate statement that funding can be used to acquire new transit vehicles to transport commuters, upgrade bus facilities, and expand transit services to connect more tribal and Native Alaskan communities.

Applications for that grant funding – available through FTA’s Tribal Transit Program – are due by August 25, the agency said.
