The Colorado Department of Transportation recently commissioned a series of murals to decorate its Firestone-Longmont Mobility Hub – art designed to help “create a connection” with the communities the facility serves along a northern stretch of the I-25 corridor.

The Firestone-Longmont Mobility Hub provides passenger service to Bustang’s North Line that connects Fort Collins, Denver, Colorado State University, and a local transit connection to RIDE Longmont.
The agency said Frank Garza created the murals; a native Colorado artist who’s been enhancing the landscapes of local communities for over 20 years through a variety of public art projects. The mural is his first at a Colorado DOT facility, the department noted.
“I named the mural ‘Connectivity’ since it would be shared by a wide range of communities that this mobility hub serves,” said Garza in a statement. “It not only pays respect to the land, the nature, and the indigenous people who were here before us, it also reminds us of the importance of water, irrigation, farmers, ranchers and field workers.”
He noted that the murals also include “historical elements” such as the coal carts representing Firestone and the locomotive train representing Longmont.
“Also, as you enter the underpass, between the left and right sides of the mural, is a stylized version of the architecture you see when you’re entering the Eisenhower Tunnel – a quiet nod to Colorado DOT and the many incredible feats of engineering they’ve accomplished,” said Garza.
“This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the different transportation options available to Coloradans, saving people time and money, and honor our milestone sesquicentennial birthday,” noted Governor Jared Polis (D). “This mural is a celebration of Colorado history, culture and communities. I am excited to see the ways we are commemorating Colorado’s history across the state, including through art.”
