On June 24, national rail safety nonprofit Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) will hold its first-ever Emergency Notification System or ENS Sign Awareness Day to remind the public how to quickly report railroad emergencies.

Each rectangular Blue and White ENS sign displays a unique phone number and railroad crossing identifier – vital information that allows the public to report emergencies quickly, when every moment matters.
“Located across the U.S. where roadways cross railroad tracks, ENS signs provide a critical connection to railroads in emergencies,” said Rachel Maleh, OLI’s executive director, in a statement. “Recognizing and using this sign in a crisis – like a stuck vehicle or trouble on the tracks – can save lives, when seconds count.”
[Editor’s note: The New York State Department of Transportation recently delved into a host of rail safety issues during its latest ‘The DOT POD” podcast episode.]
Maleh added that ENS Sign Awareness Day is designed to “shine a spotlight” on the lifesaving importance of the Blue and White ENS signs posted at railroad crossings
“The sign may be small, but its impact is enormous,” she stressed. “This campaign empowers people with knowledge that can make all the difference in an emergency. Knowing what to do – and how to act quickly – can prevent a tragedy.”
