AASHTO’s Council on Rail Transportation provides a forum to discuss, recommend, and coordinate with rail stakeholders on freight and passenger rail legislation, regulation, and other industry issues.

The AASHTO Council on Rail Transportation Annual Meeting will feature several spotlight sessions, keynotes, plenary panels, and workshops designed to focus on key state and federal rail transportation issues.

An AASHTO Freight States Meeting and a tour will also be featured.

Some of the planned topics include railway-highway safety; rail crossing information systems; state department of transportation perspectives on trends in shortline rail; state DOT and railroad coordination; workforce; the impact of passenger rail investment; an exploration of innovative passenger rail equipment solutions; and a discussion on surface transportation reauthorization for federal rail funding.

[Editor’s note: Garrett Eucalitto, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation and AASHTO’s 2024-2025 president, testified at a Congressional hearing in May about ways to improve the “efficiency and effectiveness” of federal rail funding, both for passenger and freight service.]
