The project, originally scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, added one additional lane in each direction of I-4 from U.S. 27 in Polk County to World Drive in Osceola County. They will officially open for use beginning the week of April 28.
In a statement, Governor Ron DeSantis (R) said he originally directed Florida DOT to deliver “immediate congestion relief” along I-4 as part of his “Moving Florida Forward” infrastructure initiative.
In response, Florida DOT used a “Modified Phased Design-Build” method to complete highway improvements well ahead of schedule.

The agency added that it is also expediting full-build work at the County Road 532 and World Drive interchanges and preparing to launch more projects along this specific 14-mile section of the I-4 corridor from U.S. 27 in Polk County to State Route 536 in Orange County.
Improvements include two new express lanes and one general use lane in each direction, interchange upgrades, bridge work, resurfacing, and added safety features – all aimed at enhancing traffic flow, safety, and regional connectivity to create a continuous express lane system from Seminole County to Polk County.
This is the latest in a string of surface transportation projects Florida has been working on.
In March, the Florida DOT began work on building more than 31 miles of new auxiliary lanes for I-75 from State Road 44 in Wildwood to State Road 326 in Ocala; a project that is starting 10 to 15 years ahead of schedule, according to the agency.
Florida DOT said that highway project and many others are the result of $4 billion worth of General Revenue surplus that has been committed to the “Moving Florida Forward” infrastructure initiative to help relieve traffic congestion, improve roadway safety, and enhance the state’s supply chain.
