AASHTO’s LRFD Steel Bridge Fabrication Specifications – where LRFD stands for “Load and Resistance Factor Design” – governs the fabrication of vehicular steel bridges; including the furnishing and fabrication of steel structures and the structural steel portions of other structures.

The objective of this spec guide is to achieve quality and value from a common specification that standardizes vehicular steel bridge fabrication in the United States.

Specifically, these specifications minimize variations among projects; provide economy, because individual fabricators would not have to change their methods and production variables; allow expertise in steel bridge fabrication to be shared among states; and enable owners to share resources, minimizing the effort each would, otherwise, spend to maintain their individual bridge fabrication specifications.

AASHTO said the 2025 Interim Revisions to its LRFD Steel Bridge Fabrication Specifications contain new additions and changes to several sections, especially for materials; the cutting and shearing plates and shapes; base metal repair; bending plates; tolerances; and bolted connections

AASHTO said it is necessary to have the 2025 and 2024 interim revisions for this specification guide to be fully up-to-date on current industry practices.
