The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, an equal-opportunity employer, seeks to hire a Director of Safety and Mobility; a full-time position located at its Washington, D.C., office.

This position oversees AASHTO’s Safety and Mobility Division, with responsibilities for strategic and long-range planning and budget development; recruiting, evaluating performance, and directing the activities of the division staff and contracts; and ensuring the division operates within budget.
This position also provides technical, policy, and administrative support to ensure that these programs conform to AASHTO’s policies and procedures and are cognizant of key technical, legislative, and regulatory issues.
Applications for this job opening should have a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in one of the transportation modes. In addition, a minimum of five years of management experience leading teams is required.
A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a technical or transportation-related field such as civil or transportation engineering. Evidence of a higher degree of professional development, such as postgraduate education, professional registration, leadership training, etc., is desirable.
Applicants should also have a broad understanding of all forms of transportation and an in-depth knowledge of one or more modes of transportation, as well as current developments and trends in the transportation sector. In addition, experience in both technical and policy planning or management in a state, local, or federal transportation agency or transportation trade association is desired.
Candidates for this position should have sound comprehension of the administrative, legislative, and regulatory processes at the federal, state, and local levels, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills and must be able to travel 60 to 75 days per year.
