The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is searching for a deputy director, a position located at the organization’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., which will be the second most senior position on AASHTO’s leadership team. The deputy director will report directly to AASHTO’s executive director and will assist with managing the internal and external affairs of the organization; providing guidance and support to the association’s board of directors as well as to its committee and council leadership.
The deputy director will also serve as a spokesperson and liaison between AASHTO and a variety of external agencies and organizations, including Congress, state legislatures, government agencies, the media, and other public groups.
A successful candidate will require a minimum of 15 years of progressively increasing responsibility in organizational management, with leadership experience in a state department of transportation and/or trade association preferred. In terms of education, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, public administration, public policy, engineering or another field related to AASHTO’s core operations is required, with evidence of a higher degree of professional development, such as postgraduate education, preferred.
The position also requires a broad understanding of all modes of transportation at the federal, state, and local level of government, and an in-depth knowledge of at least one mode.
A sound understanding of transportation legislative and regulatory process at the federal and state levels is also necessary, with management, business, and partnership development skills required. An advanced level understanding of management and business practices, public affairs, and communication skills is also essential to this new role within AASHTO.
