Since his appointment by Governor Tony Evers (D) in 2019, Thompson has overseen one of Wisconsin’s foremost and largest state agencies; managing a $8 billion biennial budget encompassing highways, roads, transit, railroads, airports and harbors.

Boasting over 30 years of transportation leadership at the state and national levels, including a past presidency of the Mid-America Association of State Transportation Officials, Thompson has outlined three major emphasis areas for his AASHTO term: Bolstering safety on America’s roadways, realizing the promise of the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and reinvigorating the transportation workforce.

Thompson discussed those emphasis areas in greater detail during a panel discussion with fellow state department of transportation leaders from across the country at the at the 2024 Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

He explained during that session how his emphasis areas – themed “Transportation Together” – could help “make the most out of the extremely exciting and transformational time right now” in the transportation sector.

“I’m looking at how the capabilities of AASHTO as an organization, and the combined resources and expertise of its members, can be best brought to bear and enable us to work effectively together,” he said.

“With historic investment in infrastructure across the nation, innovation reaching every corner of the industry, and technology evolving in unprecedented ways, we are paving the way for the future of mobility,” Thompson pointed out.
