That study resulted from a global tour conducted by FHWA personnel, representatives from state and local transportation agencies, and university experts to examine what USDOT termed “proven international practices” that can be applied to U.S. highway transportation system – especially in terms of improving safety.

That tour studied “noteworthy approaches and innovations” used by other countries to achieve reductions in pedestrian serious injuries and fatalities on arterial roadways. The study team researched strategies from 11 countries in Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, that outperform the U.S. in pedestrian safety outcomes.

This USDOT webinar series is part of the study team’s implementation plan and is being hosted by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center or PBIC as part of a broad outreach effort to state and local transportation agencies, as well as local planning and public works departments, consulting firms, research organizations, and safety advocacy groups.

This webinar series – with registration available here: https://www.pedbikeinfo.org/webinars/webseries_benchmarking.cfm – will take place from September through November:

  • Part 1: Introduction and Overview of Study Findings (September 25)
  • Part 2: The Movement and Place Framework (October 2)
  • Part 3: A Safe System Approach to Road Safety Audits (October 23)
  • Part 4: Speed Management Policies and Practices (November 7)

Those webinars will include presentations from study team members as well as hosting agency representatives from Australia and New Zealand, USDOT said.
