The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently released the 43rd edition of its “Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing and AASHTO Provisional Standards,” known colloquially as the “Materials Standards” guide.

Developed by the AASHTO Committee on Materials and Pavements, these standards contain specifications, recommended practices, test methods, and provisional standards commonly used in the construction of highway facilities.
Provisional standards are also published to allow practitioners to use them early in the research or development phase.
The 2023 edition of the Materials Standards contains a total of 556 standards and includes four new and 100 revised standards. (Click here to download the Summary of 2023 New and Revised Materials Standards.)
In addition to typical revisions to harmonize industry standards, update technology, and generally improve the standards, the 43rd edition includes the following two bundles of provisional standards with related revisions: Three new provisional standards (MP 48, PP 115, PP 116) that address the measurement of pavement “macrotexture” at highway speeds; and five standards ( PP 106, PP 107, PP 108, PP 109, PP 110), published in 2021, that address the assessments of different functions for transverse pavement profilers.
The 2023 edition of the Materials Standards is available as a PDF download publication. Customers can purchase either asingle-user license, or choose among several multi-user licenses—two-user, three-user, five-user, 10-user, or 25-user—which offer increasingly deeper price discounts per user.
