More than 200 people attended the third annual American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials re:source Technical Exchange event March 11-14 in Savannah, GA, which encompassed 25 unique sessions on everything from asphalt mixtures and laboratory safety to a panel discussion on the benefits of having more women represented in the engineering and construction materials testing fields.
AASHTO re:source is a technical service program that provides services and tools through three major programs: the Laboratory Assessment Program, the Proficiency Sample Program, and the AASHTO Accreditation Program.
The annual technical exchange offers laboratory managers, quality managers, supervisors, and technicians the opportunity to learn more about quality and testing in the construction materials testing industry.
Approximately 25 different session topics were covered, including:
- Soil, aggregate, asphalt binder, and asphalt mixtures technical sessions
- Common assessment findings
- Safety in laboratories
- AASHTO R 18
- Internal audits
- Corrective action
- Train the trainer
- LIMS
- Women in Engineering
In her keynote address at the meeting, Georgene Geary – the principal engineer with Georgia-based GGfGA Engineering who also spent 14 years with the Georgia Department of Transportation – spoke about “Your Role in Quality,” a theme expressed in workshop held during the exchange that aimed to give practical examples to help attendees improve the quality in their laboratories and organizations.
Feedback showed that attendees loved the real-world examples given and group discussions facilitated in multiple workshops throughout the event.
One attendee at the “Women in Engineering” panel noted, “it was lots of fun hearing the ladies chat, banter, and share; [it] gives me more leaders to talk about to future female engineering student workers/interns for my lab.”
