AASHTO, which revamped its Leadership Development Series under a new contract with the University of Kansas in October 2020, targets specific needs within three different career development phases for state department of transportation employees:
- The AASHTO Management Institute (AMI) is for emerging leaders who may be new to supervision or looking to refresh leadership skills.
- The AASHTO Leadership Institute (ALI) is geared to mid- to high-level managers with high-potential for executive level positions.
- The AASHTO Executive Institute (AEI) is designed for executives to assist with management and succession planning at the highest organizational levels.
The series continues to harmonize and modernize the curriculum to ensure alignment with the changing workforce needs of AASHTO’s members.
The AMI holds four-day-long training sessions on average five times a year geared to providing state department of transportation supervisors, managers, and leaders with the crucial competencies and resources needed to simplify and perform their duties.
The ALI is a nine-day immersive professional development experience occurring June 19 through June 27 on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, KS.
Finally, the AEI offers a unique senior executive management experience March 20 through March 23 in Washington, D.C., to examine emerging transportation policies and discuss leadership lessons and perspectives with seasoned transportation leaders.
AEI seeks to grow participant knowledge and awareness for national transportation issues and trends while building and developing relationships with peers, industry contacts, plus federal administration and Congressional personnel.
