The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently issued an updated version of its “Guide for Pavement Friction” publication.

The second edition of AASHTO’s “Guide for Pavement Friction” contains recommendations and guidelines for managing and designing highway pavements for friction.
Written for highway materials, construction, pavement management, safety, design, and research engineers, as well as others concerned with the friction and related surface characteristics of highway pavements, the second edition includes updated information on friction testing and safety – especially how the risk for both wet and dry crashes increases as pavement friction decreases.
The consideration between friction and all crashes is consistent with proactive and systemic approaches to improving safety performance across the roadway network, based on measurable risk and performance characteristics that are part of the “Safe Systems” approach.
The guide also features updated recommendations for pavement friction programs that reflect the most current safety concepts, as well as newly added on alternative friction testing equipment.
