The North Carolina Department of Transportation honored some of the state’s best multimodal projects during its 2022 Mobi Awards ceremony – a contest it started in 2019 that recognizes transportation projects that improve the economy and enhance the quality of life in North Carolina communities.

Projects had to combine the use of at least two transportation modes such as aviation, bicycle, pedestrian, ferry, public transportation, rail, and roadway to participate in the Mobi Awards contest – and more than 30 projects competed in in 2022 competition.
“Multimodal projects are an important piece of our transportation present and future,” noted Eric Boyette, NCDOT’s secretary, in a statement. “We hope that the Mobi Awards will inspire more communities to think creatively about the next great project in transportation.”
Judges selected winners and honorable mentions from the following categories: Rural, Urban, Small Urban, Large Urban and Innovation. There was also a sixth category – MVP or ‘Most Voted Project.’ For the MVP category, NCDOT placed all the 2022 entries online so the public could vote for the winner.
Julie White – NCDOT deputy secretary for multimodal transportation – presented the 2022 Mobi Awards during a luncheon event at the Raleigh Marriott City Center; a ceremony held in person for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 NCDOT Mobi Book, which has detailed descriptions and pictures of all this year’s entries, can be found online.
“These projects we honored today connect people to opportunity, to jobs, to healthcare and education,” White said. “They make our state more equitable and reduce our carbon footprint. In short, they make our state more accessible, attractive and competitive.”
