Equity became the focal point of a roundtable discussion held January 11 during the Transportation Research Board’s 2022 annual meeting in Washington D.C.

Shawn Wilson, Ph.D. (seen above) – secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and 2021-2022 president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials – led that roundtable, entitled “State DOTs: Creating Pathways to Equity.”
Below is an AASHTO Transportation TV video of that panel discussion.
Panelists participating in the TRB equity roundtable included Toks Omishakin, director of the California Department of Transportation, Yassmin Gramian, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and Vince Williams, president of the National League of Cities and the Mayor of Union City, Georgia.
During the roundtable discussion, Wilson noted that one of his overriding goals as AASHTO’s 2021-2022 president is to create a “sustainable structure” for equity that “others can follow” in the transportation industry.
“We need to talk about creating a ‘new normal’ – about having quality in the workplace alongside putting leadership of DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] principles in place to address future infrastructure needs,” he said.
