AASHTOWare, a division of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, is offering a webinar on May 25 at 1:00 pm EST to review implementation of “Empirical Bayes” methodology via its AASHTOWare Safety powered by Numetric software package.
“Empirical Bayes methods” are procedures for statistical inference in which prior distribution is estimated from the data. According to the Federal Highway Administration, that methodology helps determine if a specific project or group of transportation projects is achieving desired safety results. It also helps ensure those safety investments are worthwhile from a cost-benefit perspective.
That evaluation also provides a “quantitative estimate” of the effects on safety of a specific countermeasure, project, or group of projects, which provides valuable information for future planning.
Ultimately, the new AASHTOWare Safety software package – developed in collaboration with Numetric via a strategic partnership launched in July 2020 – ensures state departments of transportation achieve the maximum return on safety project investments.
The webinar will discuss the implementation of Empirical Bayes using AASHTOWare Safety, reviewing configurations for crash data, segmentation, safety performance function or SPF creation and maintenance, plus the importance of Empirical Bayes in network screening. The webinar also includes a question-and-answer session.
