Georgia Department of Transportation, The Ray, Donovan Energy, and the ABB Group upgrade the solar-powered electric vehicle or EV charging station located at the visitor information center off Interstate 85 in West Point, Georgia, to a more powerful 175 kilowatt (kW) unit.

The new station – which became operational June 3 – is three times more powerful than the original 50 kW station originally installed in 2015 by The Ray in partnership with Kia Motors Manufacturing.
That station was the Southeast’s first solar-powered EV charging station and – prior to its installation – travel between the state capitols of Georgia and Alabama was not possible for the majority of EVs.

Donovan Energy, a Cincinnati-based clean energy project development and finance firm, served as the technology partner to The Ray – which manages an 18-mile-long portion of I-85 as a “living transportation laboratory” – and recommended the 12 solar panel-equipped ABB 175 kW Terra modular, high-powered charging system to minimize EV re-charging times.
The Ray added in a statement that it provides EV charging for free via the ABB Terra unit at this I-85 visitor center; a unit that remains “grid-connected” to ensure it can provide re-charging power day or night year-round, regardless of weather conditions.
